Is God’s Chosen Nation Down for The Count or Limping Back for More with a Greater Power Behind Them?

In obedience to God’s instruction to return home, Jacob, having carefully devised a means to pacify his twin brother, Esau, whom he had cheated of his birthright some years back, stood alone, wondering how to define his future.

When God saw he was alone, an incident played out to change, not only his life but an entire nation. A man appeared to him and suddenly, they were caught wrestling until daybreak.

What was the bone of contention? Why didn’t Jacob behave like Joshua, who also saw a man appearing to him at a time he was apprehensive of how to conquer Jericho, yet without pouncing on the stranger? Instead, Joshua asked: Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? Jos. 5:13

As Jacob chose to wrestle with a man he did not know, he was so strong that the stranger could not prevail against him. Such was Jacob’s strength! The wrestling contest continued until the stranger decided to dislocate his hip. At that, Jacob only became more resolute.

What was Jacob fighting for? He was certainly not wrestling for the fun of it. Why should he continue to fight with a dislocated hip if it wasn’t for something eternal?

Jacob had handled wealth and success, yet he lived unsure of his future. He had wives, children, and servants, yet he could not promise any of them a future.

He knew if Esau should fight back, all he had gathered and lived for would be consumed in a jiffy. Jacob kept fighting with a broken hip, saying: “I will not let thee go, except you bless me.” Gen. 32:26.

The blessing he craved was not material – he already had enough of such. Jacob wanted a blessing that would outlive him and it started with a change of name.

The blessing he got from the strange wrestler was a change of name: “…Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” Gen.  32:28.

What a testimony borne out of the desperation to have a blessing of immeasurable impact on his generations! You can imagine a man, (later a nation), contending and prevailing against God and man!

When the stranger left, it dawned on Jacob that he had been wrestling, talking, and negotiating with God and not a man. He said: “…For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Gen. 32: 30

That was right! He fought all out with God and got away with it.

Jacob, however, left Peniel, the scene of his transformation, as a limping man. He limped all the days of his life to remind him of how he wrestled with God and how his life was graciously preserved.

That day in Peniel, a limping nation was born!

So, today, we have a limping Israel nation; yet one whose life has been and will be preserved by God. Whenever Israel limps, appearing to be weak, it is made strong by the revelation of the night the man-Israel fought with God and prevailed.

Recently, Hamas, a Palestinian militant organization, with its unexpected and unprecedented attack on Israel, painted Israel as a weak and limping nation to the world.

Nevertheless, as Israel stands bleeding and limping, like Jacob, it continues to fight. The nation stands dislocated at the moment, but as in the day in Peniel, its wrestling spirit cannot be broken.

Although it has described the recent coordinated attack as the worst in 50 years and its American version of the 9/11 attack, Israel fights limping. This time around, not to secure a blessing but to defend a blessing pronounced in Peniel.

More importantly, I wish Israel would limp its way back to God as it realizes that the sudden attack and its unfolding repercussions are reminders of its vulnerability as a nation. We hope it will limp to reconnect with God.

My heart, however, goes out to innocent individuals and families caught up in the exchange of fires!

Peace to the world!
