Stand With Us In Pardoning Chelsea Manning | Take Action Now
This came across my desk:
from Kurt Walters | Demand Progress
Last week, the news broke that Chelsea Manning has been added to President Obama’s short list for commutation.1
Now, with just four days to go before Donald Trump takes office, we’re flooding the Department of Justice with phone calls calling on Obama to save Chelsea, and we’re counting on you to help us keep up the pressure.
We’ll send part of your donation directly to her legal defense team, and the rest will help Demand Progress keep up the fight for Chelsea and all whistle-blowers.
AMAZING NEWS: NBC is reporting that Chelsea Manning has been added to President Obama’s short list for commutation.1
Chelsea is currently serving a 37-year term in an all-male military prison. She has spent more than a year in solitary confinement—treatment considered “torture” by the United Nations—and she has already attempted suicide at least twice.2
Chelsea’s life in prison will only get worse under a Trump administration. It’s up to President Obama to commute her sentence before he leaves office January 20.
Chelsea Manning’s revelations exposed the truth about war crimes committed by the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan. She uncovered video of an Apache helicopter firing on unarmed civilians.3 No one was harmed as a result of her whistle-blowing, and she proved that the American people were being lied to by their government.
As a result, Chelsea has been punished with solitary confinement for “crimes” like possession of an expired tube of toothpaste and a copy of the book I Am Malala.4 She’s been denied access to her lawyers and doctors. She has even been given solitary confinement as punishment for suicide attempts.5
Demand Progress helped collect over 100,000 signatures for the White House petition calling for Chelsea’s sentence to be commuted. And now we know our voices are being heard.
Thanks for standing with us,
Kurt Walters
